Ducks lead for 4* point guard
He's been described by some as having 'stupid handles'. Nicknamed 'DA', Dominic Artis is gaining a reputation as maybe the best point guard on the West Coast in the lass of 2012. Artist visited Oregon a week ago over the weekend and took in everything Coach Dana Altman and the players and coaches had to show him.
A four-star point guard Artis is 5' 11" and runs the court and the show like few others. With a lightening quick first step that will remind some of Aaron Brooks, and the ability to set up his teammates the way Luke Ridnour did when he ran the show in Eugene. Artis is an Oakland, California native but is spending his senior year at Findlay Prep in Las Vegas. Watch some of his film and you see a constant barrage of stop and pop jump shots or dribble drive crossover moves that end with him stepping back to create good space and knocking down the jumper.
Artis' trip apparently had a good impact on how he looks at Oregon's program and where they currently rank among his choices. "I'd say Oregon leads. But I might be visiting somewhere else I'm just not sure right now." Artis went on to talk about Coach Altman and the style of play as one of the main reasons he's strongly considering the Ducks. "They do a lot of ball screens and that's something my game's set to do. They can really get up and down. Coach Altman wants to run and that fits my style of play. I think I'm pretty good at knocking down shots, I can draw the defender and kick it to shooters and of course I try to use my quickness and speed so I'm always working hard on the transition game."
Asked what he's working to improve on Artis was quick to talk about what he's doing to constantly improve. "I'm trying to work on my strength, weight training 4-5 times a week, spending a lot of time getting stronger for sure. I also want to be more vocal on the court. Coach is always telling me to be more vocal so I'm going to make sure I do that this year," said Artis.
