WSU-UO grades: Defense

Duck Sports Authority The Oregon Ducks met the Washington State Cougars at CenturyLink Field in Seattle on Saturday night, running their record to 5-0 on the season with a 51-26 win.
The Oregon defense held WSU to 7 point in the second half after giving up 19 in the first half to help secure the victory.
Defense B+ (7 points scored, 19 offensive points against, 402 yards offense against, 26 first downs against, 8 tfl, 2-5 red zone defense)
AJ: Looking at the numbers, you would think this was a ho-hum defensive performance. The game itself didn't play that way. Yes, the total yards and even the points seem high, but the Cougars were not able to do much except try to pass. The defense absolutely stifled the WSU running game, leaving them with an embarrassing -8 yards on the ground for the night. In addition, the defense consistently dumped Halliday on his back at the end of most plays, and frustrated him to the point he started taking it out on his own teammates. While the WSU coach claimed the game was closer than the score, the opposite was more likely true. The last WSU TD was meaningless and against the Duck reserves and their early scores were aided by a number of interested calls against the Ducks.
