The No. 1 prospect in the 2009 recruiting class was the No. 229 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Brown signed with Tennessee as the nation's No. 1 recruit in 2009 after rushing for over 1,800 yards each of his last two years at Wichita (Kan.) East High School. Brown rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries against Western Kentucky in his collegiate debut, but he wouldn't exceed the 60-yard mark again the rest of his career.
After running for 460 yards and three touchdowns on 101 carries as a true freshman, Brown transferred to Kansas State. Brown arrived at Kansas State amid such high expectations that the Big 12 media made him a first-team preseason all-conference pick last summer, before he had ever played a game for the Wildcats.
He didn't come close to living up to that billing. Brown gained 16 yards on three attempts in the season opener against Eastern Kentucky and never carried the ball for Kansas State again. He left the team three games into the season and eventually decided to enter the draft.
Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid acknowledged his team "took a chance" by using a pick on Brown, but the former five-star recruit's physical skills were too impressive to ignore.
"You're talking about a kid that's just an inch under 6 foot, 224 pounds and runs a 4.4 40," Reid said in his post-draft press conference. "You're talking tremendous, tremendous skill here. [He] catches the ball effortlessly, is a very smooth runner. He has all the talent in the world. Now it's just a matter of tying things down.''
Brown became the lowest draft pick of any No. 1 overall recruit since the current version of Rivals.com started in 2002. The other seven draft-eligible No. 1 prospects were all taken in the first three rounds, including four first-round selections and three top-10 overall picks.
Texas quarterback Vince Young (Class of 2002) went to the Tennessee Titans with the third overall pick in the 2006 draft. Florida State linebacker Ernie Sims (2003) was chosen by the Detroit Lions with the ninth overall selection in 2006. Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson (2004) went to the Minnesota Vikings with the seventh overall pick in 2007. The Vikings also took wide receiver Percy Harvin (2006) with the 22nd overall pick in 2009.
Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen (2007) went to the Carolina Panthers in the second round of the 2010 draft. Penn State wide receiver Derrick Williams (2005) was a third-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2009. The Oakland Raiders took Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor (2008) in the third round of the 2011 supplemental draft.
Here's a rundown of the high schools and star ratings of Brown and all the rest of the players who were selected Saturday in the final four rounds of the draft.
