November 11, 2012The Ducks kicked off their season playing Northern Arizona University at Matt Knight Arena in Eugene on Saturday. Oregon did not come off hot in their season opener but still emerged 1-0 with an 83-73 win.
Due to it being the start of the season it is clear that the Ducks have a lot to work to do on despite their win.
"Consistency and communication defensively wasn't there," assessed head coach Dana Altman. "When we made a mistake they hit 3's."
Physically the ducks powered through the paint having no problem driving to the basket and drawing fouls. Tony Woods showed his dominance in the key by racking up 14 points (FG:6-10 and FT:2-3) 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Woods's post game is improving from last year. In the second half Woods had a huge dunk thanks to a nice spin post move.
Senior forward E.J Singler followed woods by adding his own 12 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists (FG:4-11 FT:3-6).
"This is going to be a growing process for us," said Singler. "We've got a lot of young guys out there playing right now. It's going to take time for us to get in our grove."
Oregon started to lose focus with 5:14 left to play in the second half. Northern Arizona took the lead to 67-66. Oregon stayed poised through this push and hit a couple big 3's to cushion the Ducks lead.
Oregon had a sluggish start to the season and a few kinks to work out but it's still early in season, and with the young talent the freshmen possess and the veterans to lead the way, they're sure to iron those kinks out very soon. The Ducks next opponent is Portland state on Monday at 6:30 at Matt Knight Arena.
