November 13, 2012Oregon came out fired up against their neighbors from the north Portland State University. In the end they held onto an 80-69 win at Matt Arena to run their record to 2-0 on the year.
The Ducks shot 70% downtown and 58.1% from the field. Big changes happened from their season opener against Northern Arizona starting with the energy level.
"I thought both (Dotson and Artis) of them gave much better energy defensively tonight, Jonathan Loyd started a lot of that," assessed head coach Dan Altman.
Junior Jonathan Loyd had 6 points and 5 assists, but his biggest contribution tonight was his energy level that radiated to the team in the first half. That same energy level didn't carry over into the second half.
Oregon struggled both offensively and defensively in the second half. The Ducks only shot 37.5% from the field and 22.2% from outside. And their energy level they had dissipated on defense.
"In the second half we probably just had one or two guys let down a bit, not taking a pass away and allow an easy pass to the post," said Altman. "Our defensive pressure just wasn't the same."
Despite their struggles, freshman Dominic Artis and Damyean Dotson picked up some slack. Dotson had 12 points, 3 steals and 6 rebounds while Dominic Artis lead the team with 16 points, 2 rebounds and 3 steals playing 30 minutes. A large contributor was the depth of the bench. The Bench scored 43 points in the game giving the starters some rest and a nice cushioned lead.
Oregon had a good game over all but lacked the consistency in the second half. Improvements are evident from their last match up but they will need that same energy consistent throughout the game on Friday when the Ducks face Vanderbilt at home.
