NorCal point guard high on Wazzu

Xavier Thames earned first-team all-league honors following a junior season in which he averaged 23.7 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals per game.

It should come as no surprise that the 6-foot-3, 170-pound point guard from Elk Grove (Calif.) Pleasant Grove has drawn early recruiting interest from a number of colleges.

San Diego State, UNLV, Iowa State, Santa Clara and Saint Mary's have all stepped up to the plate with an early scholarship offer.

Washington State is another program that has shown strong interest in Thames.

"I would say right now Washington State is my favorite," he expressed. "I really like their coaching staff. Coach Bennett and Coach Sanchez are great. I also like the way they play. They play good defense and they play in a competitive conference.

"Washington State has said that they have interest in me. They want to watch me in the spring time and the summer time, so we'll see how it goes from there."

Thames has already taken unofficial visits to Washington State and Saint Mary's. He is also looking at taking a trip to San Diego State in the near future.

"I am trying to go to San Diego State on an unofficial visit this weekend or next weekend," Thames said. "I really like them, also. Coach Fisher and Coach Hutson are great. And I like their style of play, too."

Thames prides himself on his mid-range game and his ability on the defensive end of the court.

"This off-season I'd like to get stronger, get a little more range on my three point shot, and continue to work on my dribbling skills," he added.
