Thames' list is three, decision near
It's getting to be crunch time for Elk Grove (Calif.) 2009 basketball prospect Xavier Thames. Thames, who stands at 6-foot-3, 177 pounds is currently in the process of narrowing down his college list that includes Iowa State and Washington State.
"He's still getting recruiting phone calls from more high majors. Every week we get a new call from a different school," said Xavier's father Ray Thames. "I think that he has pretty much settled in on those two with another school on the outside. He's going to try to decide what he wants to do."
That other school suddenly on the radar screen is Marquette and new head coach Buzz Williams.
"Marquette got in the mix right at the beginning of the spring period. They came in pretty hard," said Ray. "Academically and their style of play, it's a great place. He wants to take a look at their situation."
Thames said that his son's relationship with the Iowa State coaching staff is the one large reason that the Cyclones are getting such a strong look in his recruitment.
"Coach Otzelberger has been tremendous in the recruiting in terms of respecting our family and providing what Iowa State has to offer," Ray said. "They have recruited him from the beginning and probably showed the most interest prior to the spring. They were already there. By getting in on him early, that built a rapport. He's grown to like them and enjoys time with Craig Brackins and some of the other guys."
