Ekpre-Olomu named Jim Thorpe DB of the Week

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu Named the Jim Thorpe Defensive Back of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio - After recording two interceptions for No. 3 Oregon in their 49-0 win over No. 22 Arizona, sophomore cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (Chino Hills, CA) has been named the Jim Thorpe Defensive Back of the Week.

Ekpre-Olomu returned one of his interceptions 54 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, to help seal the game. He also added three pass breakups.

He was part of an Oregon defense that held Arizona to just 332 total yards and zero points which was far off the Wildcats' 46 point and 605 yard averages coming into the contest as the Ducks notched their first shutout in conference play in nearly a decade.

Honorable Mention Players for Week Four:

Bennett Jackson, Notre Dame, Junior Cornerback - Jackson led the Irish in tackles with nine, intercepted a pass and had a fumble recovery in Notre Dame's 13-6 win over Michigan. Jackson's fumble recovery occurred in the third quarter with Michigan down 10-3 and in the Notre Dame red zone. He is now tied for 4th in the NCAA with three interceptions on the season.

Darwin Cook, West Virginia, Junior Safety - Cook had four tackles, one sack and two key forced fumbles in West Virginia's 31-21 win over Maryland. His first forced fumble was scooped and returned 49 yards for a touchdown that gave the Mountaineers an early lead, then his second came when he stripped a Maryland receiver from behind on a 25-yard pass in WVU territory that the Mountaineers were able to recover.

Darius Polk, Kent State, Junior Cornerback - Polk had a pair of interceptions in Kent State's 23-7 victory at Buffalo, including a third quarter pick that ended one of the Bulls' longest drives of the night. Polk also had three solo tackles and a pair of pass breakups.

Brynden Trawick, Troy, Senior Safety - Trawick led a dominating defensive performance by Troy with 15 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass break up in the Trojans 14-7 victory at North Texas. Trawick's tackle total is tied with two others for the most in the Sun Belt Conference this year.

About the Jim Thorpe Award:

The Thorpe Award is named after history's greatest athlete, Jim Thorpe, and is presented by the Jim Thorpe Association in Oklahoma City. Thorpe excelled at every sport in which he competed, including football at which he played on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The 2012 Olympics mark the 100-year anniversary of Thorpe winning gold in the decathlon and pentathlon at the Stockholm Olympics.

The candidates for the award are selected by a "screening committee" of Jim Thorpe Association members who follow several players throughout the season, watching games and researching information sources to grade Thorpe Award candidates on the basis of performance on the field, athletic ability and character. The committee then narrows the field to three finalists and the names of these finalists are submitted to a national panel of about 50 sports writers, sportscasters, coaches and former players who vote to determine the winner.

The Thorpe Award winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on December 6, 2012 on ESPN.

The Jim Thorpe Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA). The NCFAA was founded in 1997 as a coalition of the major collegiate football awards to protect, preserve and enhance the integrity, influence and prestige of the game's predominant awards. The NCFAA encourages professionalism and the highest standards for the administration of its member awards and the selection of their candidates and recipients.
