Ducks take first game from Arizona

Eugene, Ore. - Three Oregon pitchers combined to hold Arizona to one run on six hits as the No. 13 Ducks won game one of a Pac-12 Conference three-game series 2-1 at PK Park on Friday night.

Jake Reed (3-3) allowed one run while scattering six hits over six innings to pick up the win. He struck out three, while walking three. Christian Jones and Jimmie Sherfy didn't allow a hit over the final three innings to wrap up the win.

Sherfy got his seventh save of the season pitching the ninth. Jones struck out three in two innings to set up Sherfy.

Brett Thomas gave Oregon (16-8, 3-1 Pac-12) the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI on a fielder's choice that scored Shaun Chase. Arizona shortstop Kevin Newman made a diving play up the middle to rob Thomas of a hit and get J.J. Altobelli at second on a force play.

Arizona (15-9, 0-4 Pac-12) tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Reed pitched his way out of trouble after the Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs. The Ducks' starter got Trent Gilbert to hit into a double play that scored the tying run. Reed got Newman to line out to first baseman Ryon Healy to end the inning.

Tyler Baumgartner put the Ducks in the lead for good with a RBI ground-rule double over right fielder Joseph Maggi's head in the bottom of the sixth. Healy, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mitchell Tolman, scored the go-ahead run.

Oregon scored two runs on five hits off Arizona starter Konner Wade (2-2) to give him the loss. Wade walked three and struck out three in 6.2 innings.

The Ducks finished with six hits with Baumgartner going 1-for-2 with a RBI, Chase going 1-for-3 with a run scored and Scott Heineman and Tolman both finishing 1-for-3. Aaron Payne and Altobelli were both 1-for-4.

The Ducks and Wildcats meet in game two of the series Saturday at 2 p.m. at PK Park. Tommy Thorpe (2-2, 3.72) is scheduled to pitch for UO, while James Farris (3-2, 3.82) is listed as the Arizona starter.
