Ducks sign prep All-American long snapper

Who is Tanner Carew? The All-American long-snapper is not exactly a household name. That is because if he does his job right, you don’t notice him. That is exactly what Carew did at Oregon. In his four-year career with the Ducks, Tanner Carew had all of zero errant snaps. A perfect snap percentage. It goes without saying that you can not do a better job than Carew did, and one of his rewards is a trip to the Senior Bowl early next month.

Sadly for Oregon football, Carew is all out of eligibility after staying on to play even after obtaining his bachelor’s degree. On Friday the Ducks signed his heir-apparent, Karsten Battles. Once again, it was a Chris Rubio long-snapping protégé.

Duck Sports Authority asked the special teams guru how many Oregon long snappers he has mentored.

“Fun fact,” he replied. “Oregon Long Snappers Jeff Palmer, Drew Howell, Tanner Carew and now Battles have all gone through Rubio Long Snapping.”

For his part, Tanner Carew has known Battles for a while.

“I love the kid,” said Carew. “Met him a while back and told the coaches about him and the recruit process took over from there. Great kid.”

In terms of performance, the future looks to be bright with Battles snapping.

“He is an elite high school prospect, one of the best in the country as I was at one point,” Carew evaluated. “I’m really proud of him.”

Chris Rubio raved about his ability.

“One of the most accurate and consistent Long Snappers I had go through Rubio Long Snapping,” said Rubio. “Hard worker. Snaps like a machine. Almost robotic how consistent he is.”

As Tanner Carew hands off the snapping torch, he expects another four trouble-free years.

“He can start all four years just like I did,” said Carew. “He is physically much more ready than I was my freshman year and maybe even sophomore year. Big strong kid. He’s going to be great here.”
