Early signing period Day One met some of the needs of Oregon’s offensive recruiting but left others untouched. Looking to sign around 16 prospects on this side of the ball for the class of 2018, the first round of letters yielded six, not quite halfway with six weeks remaining.
After several hours sleep and the new perspective it provides, we look at the offensive signees from Day One of the early signing period and how it stacks up against Oregon’s needs.
QB 1/1 A
Great programs bring in a top quarterback every year so they always have a charged pipeline. This year, Cristobal/Arroyo started off the new era right, landing the No. 5 QB in the nation, Tyler Shough. Oregon is done at this position for 2018.
RB 2/2 B+
The other position completed for Oregon is running back. Norco (Calif.) standout Travis Dye put up sick numbers in 2017 and will be joined by Rivals250 honoree Jamal Elliott, a guy who could play slot or even motion out wide if needed. Time will tell with both but their versatility is key.
OL 3/5 B
Judging by the excitement from Cristobal talking about the OL signees you would think he had landed a bunch of six-star recruits. In reality, the Ducks got letters from three very good ones in Steven Jones, Dawson Jaramillo and Chris Randazzo. All have some common attributes; Great football frame, smart, athletic. Great raw material to work with.
Another commit, Justin Johnson, did not send in his letter. But he will be a Duck. He just wants mom and dad to visit first, something they have not done.
One last player would fill the unit, Penei Sewell. The Rivals100 prospect has Oregon in his top group and it would surprise few if he did pick the Ducks.
WR 0/5 F
The Ducks suffered four decommits at this position post-Taggart; Warren Thompson, Tre’shaun Harrison, Braden Lenzy and Miles Battle. They were sitting pretty, four commits, all four-star rated prospects.
Now they are starting over from scratch, and the first day of early LOI did not yield any results.
The Ducks will sign some wide receivers in this class, the question is who. Four of the most likely are listed above; the decommits. The northwest duo, Lenzy and Harrison, would be the most likely. They are in the running still for Battle, and Thompson could shock the world and recommit.
Other intriguing targets are still uncommitted as well.
Number one would be five-star, Rivals100 member Devon Williams. Oregon has as good or better shot as anybody with him.
Jalen Hall, Jaylen Waddle and Isaah Crocker, all four-stars, are other possibilities.
TE 0/3 F
This grade will jump dramatically, even if just the two commits, Spencer Webb and Teagan Quitoriano, sign. But the Ducks did not get their letters on Day One and that is what we are grading.
To fill this unit Oregon will also have to add back decommit Michael Ezeike, something they have a shot at doing.
Six weeks from now will be the traditional letter of intent day, and only after then can we truly grade this class. After Day One though, offensive recruiting is off to a solid start.
