National Signing Day By Position: Top safety classes

Today, we conclude our series looking at the top 10 schools for each position group in the 2018 class, finishing with the safety position.

Signed: Caden Sterns, BJ Foster, DeMarvion Overshown

The Longhorns got bigger in their secondary. Sterns in a five-star and Foster and Overshown are four-stars. All three are taller than 6-foot-1 with Overshown being right at 6-4. Sterns is the No. 2 safety in the country, Foster is No. 6 and Overshown is No. 12. All three are from Texas as well, which is big for the Longhorns.

The Buckeyes signed some versatile prospects in this class and one is Johnson. He is a ranked as a five-star safety, the no. 1 safety in this class, but do not be surprised if he gets a look at cornerback early on. He has great length, he is physical and he thinks he can win each battle. Proctor is a very balanced safety that Ohio State took away from Oklahoma. He has the size and ball skills to make Buckeye fans excited.

Signed: Jaiden Woodbey

The numbers are not on FSU’s side here when comparing or ranking classes at this position, but Woodbey is the No. 3 safety in the country, so the Seminoles have to be in this group. Florida State beat Ohio State for Woodbey and he could be an instant star in Tallahassee. The five-star does pretty much everything at a very high level.

Signed: Houston Griffith, Derrik Allen

The Irish signed two national recruits in Griffith and Allen. Griffith was at one time committed to Florida State and Allen was all Notre Dame from the start. They are two of the top 11 safeties and each has good size. Griffith may be the stronger in coverage, while Allen packs a punch. Each could see the field this fall.

LSU had a tough National Signing Day losing long-time Tiger lean Patrick Surtain Jr. to Alabama, but it kept Joseph at home. He is the No. 5 safety and with the loss of Surtain, that could even push Joseph to cornerback. What stands out about this Tiger signee is his toughness and instincts. He has a chance to be another very good one in the secondary for LSU.

This one committed to Texas A&M twice and was a big get for new head coach Jimbo Fisher. O’Neal flirted with Clemson and Georgia, but in the end, he stayed home with the Aggies. He is an athletic safety with size who ended up in the final Rivals100 due to his ability to play the pass and the run.

Signed: Quindarious Monday, Jamien Sherwood

Auburn signed a couple of safeties with length in this class. Monday will light up offensive players and he has good ball skills. Sherwood is another physical safety who loves contact. Monday is the No. 15 safety and Sherwood is No. 20. You could also throw Kolbi Fuqua in this group. He is listed as an athlete, but he is another big body who could end up at safety.

Miami stayed local here and got two guys from South Florida. Hall plays with aggression and he loves to hit. Frierson is strong in coverage and he could get a look at corner or be a big safety who can move around and cover downfield. Mark Richt and his staff did a great job of keeping two four-stars at home.

Signed: Steve Stephens, Jevon Holland

Stephens is the N0. 10 safety and Holland is No. 27, and both are four-stars. The Ducks have not signed a pair of safeties like this in modern times, so this is big for new head coach Mario Cristobal. Stephens is known most for his ability to cover at safety. Holland is a little bigger, he is more filled out and there is already chatter about him playing a role in the defensive backfield next fall.

This is a very good tandem for Scott Frost and his coaching staff in Lincoln. Jones is the thicker, stronger safety who is known for playing physical and bringing the wood. Then you have Smith, one who could be labeled as a ball-hawk due to his ball skills and knack for making plays on the ball. Cameron Taylor is an athlete who signed with the Huskers and he could end up in the mix at this position, too.
