Ducks interested in Corvallis OL

The 1-2 Corvallis Spartans are looking to recapture the mojo from their opening game win over North Eugene on Friday when they host rival Crescent Valley (2-1). But whether they struggle or not on the field, colleges will be watching them carefully because their roster includes a legitimate D-1 college prospect in 6-foot-4, 280-pound offensive tackle/defensive lineman Marco Brewer.

On film he shows raw talent with an aggressive streak and finish trench coaches on both sides of the ball prize. While he sometimes plays as tall as Oregon’s lush and beautiful forests, the D-1 frame and his college potential come through clearly, even as a sophomore, his first full year as an offensive lineman.

“My first year of football was eighth grade where I played tight end at 180-pounds,” recalled Brewer. “Freshman year I played OL and TE at 195. First time I ever heard of a pass block was my sophomore year. And that year I started varsity and made first team all-league. So it’s just been going up since there. But I have not been playing football very long.”

But already in that short time frame, colleges are taking notice, and not just locally.

“The most interest I am getting is for visits and talking to coaches. I am getting visit invites from Oregon State, Oregon and Washington State. I got some game invites from Navy, Eastern Washington and Utah State, those are the game visits that I have got.

“Also letters from camps are saying that I am recognized. I have gotten Florida State, Baylor, Washington that I can think of right now.”

Despite the rawness of his talent going into his junior campaign, his trajectory is clearly upward. And it may not be too long before he lands his first offer.

“I would say the closest schools to offering me a scholarship would be Oregon State, Oregon and Washington State because they talk to me the most,” said Brewer. “Oregon and Oregon State I am an in-state recruit so I am closest to them.

“They recognize me as a mobile lineman which is needed for all three of those offenses.”

At Oregon’s home game against Virginia, Brewer was in the stands as an unofficial visitor.

“It was pretty cool,” he recalled. “This time I just came for the game. The other time I was there they gave me the tour and stuff. Obviously all their facilities are super-nice and that was really cool to see.”

His first visit to Eugene was the springboard for his recruitment from the Ducks.

“The spring game was the first time I met Coach Greatwood. He said he was going to wait until the season where he can catch a game and see my highlights. I sent him highlights of that first game and then he wanted me to come visit after that. I visited right after the second game.

“After the game we talked about how the game went and he talked about being a mobile O-lineman and how they like that here. He said he was going to come catch a game soon.”

Soon may very well be this weekend.

“I recommended to Coach Greatwood the 23rd against CVU (Crescent Valley). I am playing against like three Oregon recruits. It’s our rivals too so I told him that would be a good game.”
