The beginning of a new season is all about learning lessons and improving for the stretch run. Oregon was able to learn more about itself and earn a victory over Georgia to open Year 14 under Dana Altman Monday afternoon.
The Ducks finished with four players in double figures as they featured a balanced scoring effort to take down the Bulldogs, 82-71, in the Hall of Fame Series at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Altman returns a big portion of his rotation from last season's team including multiple starters, and each of the top returners made an impact in Monday's wire-to-wire victory.
Preseason All-Pac-12 first team member N'Faly Dante made his presence felt around the basket for the Ducks as he finished the game with a career-high 21 rebounds to go with 16 points, tying him with Brennan Rigsby for the team-high in scoring.
Nate Bittle (13) and Jermaine Couisnard (12) also finished in double figures in Oregon's opener.
It didn't take long for Oregon to build up a substantial lead. Behind a pair of buckets from both Bittle and Couisnard, the Ducks took a 10-point lead at the 16:46 mark of the first half. That eventually grew to as many as 17 only around 8 minutes later on a 3-pointer from freshman Kwame Evans, Jr. at the 8:17 mark.
As would be the case throughout the game, Georgia would make a run to close the gap to just 4 points thanks to a 17-4 run highlighted by four 3-pointers for the Bulldogs.
Oregon eventually regrouped and built its lead back up and took an 10-point advantage into the locker room after a buzzer-beating basket on a floater in the lane by Keeshawn Barthelemy capping an 8-2 run for the Ducks.
UGA then went on another run closing the gap to 4 points a second time less than 2 minutes into the second half, but the Bulldogs would never get closer than two possessions.
Eventually, thanks to a strong all-around showing from several players, the Ducks were able to regain a hefty lead at 20 points, their largest of the game, with 9:47 to play after a 3-pointer from transfer Kario Oquendo playing against his former squad.
Oregon held off another late run from Georgia to pull out the win and move to 1-0 on the season and 2-0 in their all-time series with the Bulldogs.
In the end, Altman's team was helped by 28 points off 16 UGA turnovers in addition to the Ducks dominating the paint scoring, 48-20. Aided by the career day from Dante, Oregon led the rebounding battle by a wide margin, 63-41.
Where Altman will want to see improvements will be from the free-throw line where his team finished just 14 for 29 (48%) in Monday's opener.
The Ducks return to Eugene later in the week to face Montana in the home opener Nov. 10 with tipoff set for 6 p.m.
