Rupp nabs bronze in marathon

RIO DE JANEIRO – Running in only his second marathon, Oregon alum Galen Rupp took home the bronze medal in the final track and field event of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games Sunday morning.

It was the sixth medal of this Olympiad won by Duck alumni.

Rupp challenged for the silver before settling in for the bronze. Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the marathon in 2:08:44. Feyisa Lilesa of Ethopia won silver in 2:09:54, with Rupp just behind, covering the 26.2 miles in 2:10:05.

UO alum Carlos Trujillo, competing for Guatemala, had an excellent showing with a 67th-place finish in 2:20.24.

Of the 22 all-time Olympic medals won by Oregon alums, nearly a third came in Rio.

In addition to Rupp’s bronze, Oregon’s contingent included gold medals by Ashton Eaton (decathlon), Matthew Centrowitz (1,500 meters), English Gardner (4x100 meter relay) and Phyllis Francis (4x400 meter relay), and a bronze by Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton (heptathlon).

The UO’s medal total matched that of Belgium, Greece, Switzerland and Thailand.

The track and field portion of 2016 Summer Olympics concluded Sunday with a school-record 17 current and former Ducks in Rio (11 on Team USA, three for Canada, and one each for Australia, Greece and Guatemala). This was the 20th straight Olympiad that the University of Oregon has been represented, a streak that dates to the 1932 Games in Los Angeles.

In addition to the 17 current and former Ducks competing in Rio, the head coach of the U.S. Men's Track and Field team was UO associate athletic director Vin Lananna.
