Oregon won with scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-12, 25-15. The Ducks had several errors on the night and at times the persistent Vikings capitalized on them, keeping it close until the third and fourth sets when Oregon stepped up and ultimately claimed victory.
Despite the win, Coach Jim Moore recognized that a couple of his players were struggling throughout the match but that others picked up the slack. "Neticia was there and everybody came through," Moore said. "People are going to have good nights and bad nights."
It was a good night for senior middle blocker Neticia Enesi who led the Ducks with 15 kills on .520 hitting. The Dalles, Ore., native stepped up for Oregon and helped the team get back to a focused, aggressive mindset. "When we went downstairs after the break we needed to regain composure and kind of get our focus back into the game," Enesi said. "In the third game we just came out and refocused and knew we had to get on it and be aggressive."
Two other Oregon players put up double-digit kills on the night as well. Junior outside hitter Heather Meyers had 12 kills on .348 hitting and Sonja Newcombe posted 11 kills and also tallied 11 digs, which marked the 35th double-double of Newcombe's career.
Heather Meyers also had five service aces and seven digs on the night. Freshman libero Haley Jacob along with senior setter Nevena Djordjevic led the Ducks with eight digs, a career high for Jacob.
Sophomore outside hitter Dana Stephenson and freshman outside hitter Katherine Fischer defensively led the Ducks at the net with five and four blocks, respectively.
Looking ahead, the Ducks have a week to get ready for a 4-game road trip where they will play Utah (9/15) and Utah Valley (9/16). Next, Oregon travels to Colorado to take on No. 9 Minnesota (9/18) and Denver (9/19) in the University of Denver Tournament before returning home to host No. 3 University of Washington and Washington State in the Pac-10 season opener on Sept. 25 and 27, respectively at McArthur Court.
