Oregon (3-2) will take on Connecticut (2-3) will square off for the fifth-place trophy of the Maui Invitational on Wednesday. The path to the consolation bracket final was not easy for either team. For the Ducks it was an upset loss to Georgetown on Monday followed by an overtime win against Tennessee on Tuesday. The Huskies lost their opener to Oklahoma State then held on to beat a pesky Chaminade squad.
This game could be a tale of two stars; Dillon Brooks for Oregon and Jalen Adams for Connecticut. Adams scored 34 points against Oklahoma State in the Huskies’ opener followed by a 25 point, 11 assist and nine rebound effort Tuesday. Brooks led the Ducks in both scoring (16.7) and assists (3.1) in 2015/16 but sat out the first three games of the year after undergoing offseason surgery on his foot.
After being used sparingly in the opening round game, Dana Altman leaned on Brooks with heavier minutes against the Volunteers, playing 25 minutes in reserve but leading the team with 17 points.
And both teams may need to rely on their two playmakers. Oregon has been cold from the outside except for Brooks; Tennessee played the first two tournament games without their second- and third-leading scorers, Terry Larrier (13.5) who was injured against Oklahoma State and Alterique Gibson (10.3). Both are questionable for this game.
