Oregon HC target PJ Fleck: I haven’t talked to anybody

Western Michigan University head coach P.J. Fleck has a lot on his plate. After leading the Broncos to a 13-0 regular season record following a hard-fought 29-23 win over Ohio in the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship on Friday, Fleck and staff are hitting the road.

“We're going to be recruiting tomorrow,” said Fleck after the game.

The same cannot be said for the University of Oregon who earlier this week fired head coach Mark Helfrich and presumably, the rest of his staff. This state of paralysis by limbo comes with a little over a week before the December 12th NCAA recruiting “dead period”, a month during which coaches cannot have in-person contact with recruits.

The name that has emerged as a top candidate for the Oregon job is Fleck, who was not interested in discussing it following the game.

“Nothing should be a distraction away from those kid,” deflected Fleck. “Everything about college football is about kids.”

But personally, he does have other distractions. In addition to recruiting to attend to, schools like Oregon are pounding down his door for job interviews though as of now, the interactions have been handled by his agent. All the while the 36-year old rising star of the college coaching ranks has a bowl to prepare for. And he was not shy after the MAC Championship about hinting at which one he prefers.

"We deserve to be in the gosh darn Cotton Bowl.” said Fleck. “We are 13-0. We are the best group of five team in the country. We didn't lose a game. Whoever they put on our schedule, we beat. There are two undefeated teams in the country, us and Alabama. There is no argument. My TV will be off.

“I am going to have cotton shirts. I'm going to have cotton slippers. I'm going to have cotton ear muffs. I am going to have a cotton jacket. I'm going to wear everything cotton from here on out."

Though Fleck claims he won’t be watching, if he did sneak a peek it would be during the ESPNU College Football Bowl Selection show airing 1-3 pm PT on Sunday, December 4th. And he will likely have to wait towards the end as the Cotton Bowl is scheduled to be the last of the “New Years’ Day 6” to be selected.

For the Ducks, with the clock ticking for their choice, the wait could be long if their pick is Fleck as many pundits have suggested. If WMU is chosen for the Cotton Bowl, it is a month away, on January 2, 2017. Regardless, they will be going to some bowl near New Years’ Day.

And apparently, he has had zero conversations with other teams at this point, insisting he would handle any suitors the “right way”.

If that way includes not taking meetings, not making any announcement before his team plays their bowl game, the courtship would have to begin next year after the Bronco’s season. Should the Ducks decide he is their man, their 2017 recruiting class would be in disarray at that point, about half full with a month to go before signing day.

Though he steadfastly refused to discuss his future past his current team and season, he certainly did not shut the door on speculation.

“We are going to celebrate this tonight, period,” insisted Fleck. “I said before I haven’t talked to anybody and that’s been 100% truth. We are going to do it the right way.”

“Moving on as we continue to go here, we’ll see.”
