Oregon recruiting mid-Summer report card

Summer is upon us bringing with it the first Duck Sports Authority Recruiting Report Card for the Class of 2017.

Overall numbers: The Oregon class of 2017

This class will probably be on the low end of the normal range for size. As of mid-July, the Ducks have somewhere around 20 scholarships available to allocate to this class when accounting for the recent news of the transfer of WR Kirk Merritt to Texas A&M.

Sunday’s announcement by Jesuit ATH Demetrius Douglas in favor of the Ducks gives them a total of 11 commitments to the class, more or less half way done for this year.

Current grade Offense: C+

Offensive commits as of 7/18/16

So far six of the pledges are slated to begin their career on the offensive side of the ball as listed above. We included kicker Adam Stack on the offense list though that is arbitrary. The grade at this point is just slightly above average on the offensive side of the ball. While the quality is good, the lack of wide receiver commits, and no quarterback commit, leaves this mark with much room for improvement.

Still left in the need department for this class would be 2-3 WR's, 1 or 2 OL and perhaps a quarterback.

The headliner for the current group is local standout Alex Forsyth with the most underrated being CJ Verdell.

Defensive commits as of 7/18/16

Just like on offense the Ducks are about half done with their recruiting on defense. With five committed prospects slated for defense, Brady Hoke and company are looking for around five more with the ideal mix being one more DE, another DT, one LB and two DB's. The guys they do have are very good with Deommodore Lenoir being the headliner so far and Reitmaier being the most underrated.

Current overall grade: B-

We are feeling mighty generous towards Mark Helfich today and are going to round up to the 'B' range. The Duck recruiting class is currently ranked No. 31 in the country with probably more room to move up than most programs looking at the average total number of commits at other schools. To really move up they are going to have to add guys of Rivals250 caliber and that is a distinct possibility.

How they play in 2016 could potentially sway a few of these guys, and the early game at Lincoln against Nebraska will have many potential Ducks watching.
